Passing of former Coach Jack Green
Coach Jack Green

Jack Green grew up in Dorchester and attended Boston English High School.  He graduated from Boston University and received his Master’s Degree from Boston State.  Jack was the head football coach at Charlestown High School for 31 years and had a great history in semi pro football for many years.  Jack coached Charlestown Townies in the old Boston Park League from 1971 to 1978 and won five league championships in 72, 73, 74, 75 and 77. He was also named Coach of the Year in 72, 74 and 75.  Additionally, Jack was President of the Park League in 1977 and attended a record of 64 wins, 10 losses and 5 ties.

In 1980, Jack took over as head coach of the Hyde Park Cowboys of the Eastern Football League.  He coached there until 1987 registering a record of 67 wins and 13 losses, winning League titles in 1981, 82 and 84.  Jack received Coach of the Year recognition in 82, 84 and 87.

Coach Green followed his tenure with the Cowboys by returning to coach the Charlestown Townies from 1988 to 1995 – winning 42 games and losing 28.

Last year Jack returned to coaching to help start the Braintree Cowboys.

During his many years coaching Jack received several awards, including being named to the American Football Association Hall of Fame.  He received the William Ohrenberger Award from the Gridiron Club of Greater Boston for his many contributions to football and was named Coach of the Year by the Association of New England Football Officials.

Coach Green also coached with the Shriners All Star Game and was head coach for the City of Boston Darryl Williams All Star Game.

Jack is survived by his Wife Jean, Daughter Marie Keough and his Sons Tony and John who are also football coaches. 

The wake will be held Saturday, April 23rd from 4:00pm to 8:00pm at the Koehane Funeral Home, 785 Hancock Street in Quincy.  The Funeral Mass will be held Monday, April 25th at 10:00am at St. Anne’s Church, 757 Hancock Street in Quincy.
